Chunking by social relationship in working memory
نویسندگان
چکیده
Working memory (WM) uses knowledge and relations to organize store multiple items in fewer structured units, or chunks. We investigated: (a) whether a crowd that exceeds the WM capacity is retained better if individuals can be grouped social chunks; (b) what counts as chunk: two involved meaningful interaction just spatially close face-to-face. In delayed change-detection task, participants were more accurate reporting changes arrays involving facing (vs. non-facing) dyads they depicted interactions not (Experiments 1, 2 4). This advantage survived secondary task increased load, only when formed (Experiment 3). Thus, representation of chunk crowds groups. The mere face-to-face positioning sufficient trigger chunking, although without semantic anchor this process fainter susceptible interference.

Chunking in Working Memory and its Relationship to Intelligence
Short-term memory and working memory are two distinct concepts that have been measured in simple and complex span tasks respectively. A new span task was designed to manipulate a chunking factor while using a procedure similar to simple span tasks. This span task allowed studying the interaction between storage and processing in working memory, when processing is fully dedicated to optimizing s...
متن کاملWorking memory for social information: Chunking or domain-specific buffer?
Humans possess unique social abilities that set us apart from other species. These abilities may be partially supported by a large capacity for maintaining and manipulating social information. Efficient social working memory might arise from two different sources: chunking of social information or a domain-specific buffer. We test these hypotheses with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMR...
متن کاملWorking memory task performance and chunking in early Alzheimer's disease.
BACKGROUND Chunking is a powerful encoding strategy that significantly improves working memory performance in normal young people. AIMS To investigate chunking in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease and in a control group of elderly people without cognitive impairment. METHOD People with mild Alzheimer's disease (n = 28) were recruited and divided according to Mini-Mental State Examinati...
متن کاملShort-term Working Memory and Chunking in SLA
After elaborating the definition of working memory, the relationship between short-term memory and working memory, chunking in SLA and the relationship between short-term memory and chunking, this paper proves the importance of chunking through the experiment: the students’ capacity in fast reading, reading in depth, listening and cloze from experimental group was affected by vocabulary depth t...
متن کاملChunking in Spatial Memory 1 Running head: CHUNKING IN SPATIAL MEMORY Chunking in Spatial Memory
In order to gain insight into the nature of human spatial representations, the current study examined how those representations are affected by blind rotation. Evidence was sought that while certain environmental aspects may be updated independently of one another, other aspects may be grouped (or chunked) together and updated as a unit. Participants learned the locations of an array of objects...
